Normally the only real requirement for becoming a veterinarian assistant near San Francisco, CA is having a high school diploma or the equivalent. However there are some skills that are helpful for anyone wishing to become a veterinarian assistant. These skills include such things as:

There is no mandatory training or education program for those wishing to become a San Francisco veterinarian assistant. In many cases, you will get your training right in the vet clinic or veterinarian office where you work. This on the job training, may take only a few months or years depending on how much time the veterinarian or veterinarian technician has to devote to each aspect of your training. Often on the job trainees start out doing clerical and administrative tasks and slowly learn the other tasks directly relating to animal care.

Although there is no mandatory Veterinarian assistant training program the National of Veterinary Technicians of America has created the Approved Veterinary Assistant designation which is recognized by the AVMA. In order to sit for the test to get the designation, you must first complete an approved program for veterinarian assistants. Once you complete the program and pass the test you get a certificate stating you are are an Approved Veterinary Assistant in California.

Oddly enough there seems to be little or no information on just how long this training program takes or what it entails. To learn more about this training program, you will need to contact a community college or technical school that offers Veterinarian technician programs in California that have been approved by the American Veterinary Medicine Association and that offer a program especially designed for vet assistants.

While neither the training or the designation is a requirement to be hired as a veterinarian assistant near San Francisco, completely the program and getting the designation may increase your chances of being hired as well as your rate of pay. This Designation is recognized by all 50 states.

Even after completing the program and receiving the designation, most places will also want you to undergo on the job training specific to the place you work. Working veterinarian assistants can also enroll the program and work towards becoming a DVA.

Duties of a Veterinarian Assistant in San Francisco

Veterinary Assistants engage in a wide variety of duties.
